People need to stop acting like gays are some all-powerful demographic to the point where it would make sense to pander to them for exploitative reasons when the result is automatically turning off a good portion of the much larger/more powerful heterosexual bloc.
It's certainly not been in Gaga's best commercial interest to be such a vocal supporter of gay rights, especially when she would still have legions of gay fans (without risking straights feeling alienated) without any of the LGBT advocacy by simple virtue of being a blonde-haired pop star w/ a sexual image and theatrical style.
The LGBT community doesn't automatically owe her some measure of fealty just because she's been willing to take a stand for what is really just the recognition of basic human rights, but it never ceases to amaze me how quick some are to slap away a helping hand (all the more silly when motivated by stan bias).
Oh, and would it have offended you if she won her VMA and said "For God and my gays"? Not so different from "For God and my girls," only the wording she used was more inclusive - no doubt if she'd said "my gays" y'all would have jumped down her throat and said she only cares about gay people who are willing to give her their money/support. That gender-based grouping is obviously an extremely common term of endearment.
I get the danger of diminution, but there is such a thing as recognizing/appreciating positive intent and affording some intellectual charity peppered in there somewhere among the ranting and railing.
