Indie = Independent, it's the same thing. It did live up to it's hype. The producers, directors, and actors were surprised by the outcome because of its limited release.
With all the hype it supposedly had, I think a Napoleon Dynamite kind of total in the 30-50m range would have been expected. But under 15 million? That's not even a blip on the radar for a film with an all-star cast like this.
