In Christianity, the criteria which man will be judged by God is through his actions. Being gay is not a sin. It is the homosexual act which is. The same judgment will be given for faith. Believing alone won't save anyone. He/she must act upon his/her faith to be saved because faith without action is dead.
And what the ESPN reporter said goes not only for gays but for everyone, because everyone is a sinner. The biblical God is not a homophobic God if you're basing this misconception alone from a passage from the Bible. The Bible actually contains only 6 admonishments to homosexuals and 362 admonishments to heterosexuals. Gays and straights are all equal in God's eyes. God loves them all but condemns their sins.

I'm not sure exactly what that means though. I mean I believe in God and I try and go through life being the best person I can be to others around me. But i'm not sure exactly which actions we are supposed to act upon and which we are not. It's interesting though that many Christians choose to deem homosexuality as a one way trip to hell, but in reality they we all have far more to be worried about.
