Sleeping With Sirens just released the first single, “Low,” off their new album Feel (in stores June 4th) a day early and needless to say, it’s catchy and definitely captures their sound. But what it lacks is change, depth, or anything new!
People jumping up and down, a perfect feel-good concert song, something catchy to excite the fans – I’m sure that’s what they had in mind. “Low” does capture that upbeat tone with an appealing chorus, but that’s about all the song offers. With their fan base at a high, maybe the band feels like there is no need to change things up. That may be so, but the effort put into “Low” seems almost lazy.
Their last album Let’s Cheers to This exemplified progression for the band with a softer sound, more singing and memorable lyrics. And shortly after with the release of their acoustic EP If You Were a Movie, This Would Be Your Soundtrack, it struck me that lead singer Kellin Quinn may be open to changing things up a bit, trying something new. After two hits like that, his collaboration with Pierce the Veil on “King For a Day” just threw my “fan-girl” excitement over the edge. What wrong could Kellin do?
The warning signs were there however. The band’s Halloween single “Dead Walker Texas Ranger” was anything but haunting; it was boring. And now we have “Low.” With a repetitive nature, the instrumentals are simply unimpressive as well as the lyrics, “Don’t make me feel low.” “You make me feel low.” They don’t make me feel anything at all. All I can say is, hopefully this was just a slip-up and Feel has something more in store for eager Sleeping With Sirens fans. Whatever the case may be, we’ll find out soon.
