Has Apple ever really been about the best technology or value for money?
They're about design, ease of use, integration, etc. While I think Apple's image has certainly taken a dive over the last year or two, people with the resources always end up going back to the Store for their new laptop/phone/tablet. Apple buyers hardly even give other options a second look. Which is a large part of why the company's image has suffered (the rebel is now the status quo, they're resting on their laurels just like their customers, etc.). But in the end I don't think Apple is legitimately less imaginative or less deserving of success than they ever were in the past.
Personally, their computers hold my interest and loyalty in a more meaningful way than their iDevices. I'll probably consider a GS4 when it's time to replace my iPhone 4S unless they make some amazing changes in the fall, and I've been using iPhones for six years. I would shop very carefully before plunking down for an iPad if I ever need a tablet, too. But I know I'll replace my Mac with another Mac. Apple computers make Windows computers feel disposable and unreliable. My unibody MacBook is 4.5 years old and still purring--I haven't even gotten around to replacing the battery or upping the RAM yet, and I abuse the thing with how much I leave it on and keep fifty zillion windows and apps open.
