Let me take a look at the Idol wiki and see about this.
Season 2: Clay had a more successful career than Ruben.
Season 3: Jennifer Hudson had a more successful career than Fantasia.
Season 5: Both Daughtry AND Katherine McPhee have had more successful careers than Taylor Hicks. I seriously cannot recall if Hicks ever even had A. SINGLE. SONG.
Season 7: I remember David Archuleta TONS more than I remember David Cook. Honestly, they probably had about the same amount of success post-Idol. Then we have Carly Smithson, whose band We Are the Fallen made literally THE. BEST. RECORD. involving an Idol contestant ever, proving that success or not, just because you win does not mean you are the most talented.
Season 8: Adam Lambert.
Seasons 9+ I honestly have zero familiarity with any of these peoples' careers, they can't have done too well.
So yeah, Lazaro was 100% on the money, the fact that you don't have to win to be the best has long been a reason I have found this show to be a joke with no credibility. I wouldn't even be watching now if Nicki wasn't on. And once she's gone, I'll go back to shunning the daylights out of this hack of a show.
