I was recently told by a friend that religion is a good thing even when it's proven fake only because it brings people together and teaches morality.


Do you think this is true? Is religion good for people even if it isn't based on facts?

The idea of religion is good but the way it is used is bad.

Morality? Morality meaning that it's wrong to eat lobster, to shave, to lie etc and yet we all break those rules? I'm speaking on Christianity at the moment. They have no right to be talking about morals and rights, since they break the rules they make for the community. If anything people think its okay to do wrong things then expect forgiveness.

Religion is good. It's just that people are corrupt and bad. It's not like a world with no religion would make a difference. The two world wars are the worst thing in human history and none involved religion.

There are some documented psychological benefits to the sense of hope and security of an afterlife that religion brings, but as a social institution there are myriad issues as history has shown.

Some morality religions teach are very good & are helpful. Religious passages also teach very strong & all-emcompassing good messages.

religion like anything has it's positives and negatives, the only issue I have is when it tries to to incorporate itself with govt. That's when things tend to get messy

I personally believe religion is a lie (morality is taught by people, religion is just an eternal punishment/reward system supporting it), but I understand those who see religion as a means to bring people together, especially minority groups (even if under false pretenses, but that's generally not my concern).

ugh with this statement again. people who bring this up should first educate themselves on the old testament vs new testament, the old covenant, new covenant and mosaic law.

basically, those laws about two different fabrics and all that stuff people bring up are no longer laws under the new covenant made by Jesus.

anyway I agree with what others have said that religion is a good thing, but its people who ruin it.

What's the point of following a religion where you break all the morals, rights and ethics taught by it? It's like stanning for Katy, but effortlessly dragging the hell out of her while ignoring her latest music. I'm sorry but its true.

No religion is based on facts. For example, Christianity is based on accounts, which is second-hand paraphrased, twisted info of what happened centuries ago.

Pretty much this. Excluding the nutjobs, religion gives so many people hope and hope is never a bad thing.

Just like it's an opinion to think that it's true, specially since most religions are based in faith.

Right? People always put Christianity on blast using this argument and it's clear that they have not one iota of knowledge in regards to Biblical history.

Those passages are only a small part of my argument. And by people you mean, the whole catholic church - the leaders and upper class right?
