Gwyneths acting is forgettable.

Winona's post 90's career is embarrassing but her 90's work easily surpasses anything Gwyneth has done. And it's not like Gwyneth did much in the 2000s either, her most noteworthy role was as Iron Man's girlfriend.

Watching Ryder in Black Swan was kind of heartbreaking through. The irony of her playing a troubled hasbeen who's career was ruined from a mistake and then gets replaced by a younger version of herself. Perfect casting, but damn....

Gwyneth Paltrow is a name, and little else. She has no real screen legacy to speak of—very few memorable roles, even fewer memorable films. Her most noted work, Shakespeare in Love, isn't an enduring classic, nor is it cultishly beloved. Winona's best works continue to make an impression. There's an audience of both old and new fans that will enjoy Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands and Reality Bites for years to come. Ask three of your friends to come over and watch Shakespeare in Love. I'll pay you $20 if anyone shows up.

Gwyneth isn't a star. She's lacking a certain je ne sais quois that would make her an interesting female lead. She's best as part of a large supporting cast (Contaigon, Royal Tenenbaums or The Talented Mr. Ripley), and that's something that either she or the powers that be have realized over the years, because, at this point, she isn't granted many leading roles. Not that she hasn't sought out that leading lady hat in the past. You don't sign on for a Silvia Plath biopic with the expectation that your work in this very serious film about a very tragic figure will be met with so much indifference.

I wouldn't use the word "iconic" with any of them, but I prefer Winona.
