Not really but I do admit that the music that plays when the burglar comes did startle me a bit.

this. I would not play at all when I was little because everytime someone died in The Sims there would be death music and it scared me
Sims 2 and 3 everytime at night I get worried theres gonna be a burglar with scary ass music so I used to mute it

Not in a horror sense, but I think it's a combination of the uncanny valley effect with the earlier Sims being very robotic (future sims games felt more cartoony and didn't suffer from uncanny valley as much imo) and the investment you have in your sims that gives something strange or tragic like a burglary, fire, ghosts or death a sense of fright.

I have the Sims 3 but I haven't touched any of the expansions, I would love to get back into it though.

I didn't play Sims 1. But I wouldn't want to the nights w/ ghosts and that kinda stuff in Sims 2/3 happened to me

I think "fascinating" is the word, I remember my first time playing The Sims (1) and being beyond impressed.
