Last night (4/11/13) on the Idol results show, Kelly Clarkson performed her new single
People Like Us for the first time. For the performance she wore glow-in-the-dark paint on her clothes and her body. She posted a picture on Instagram and Twitter while getting ready in which she showed an equality symbol painted on her wrist and wrote
"#equality" showing her support for the gay community...
As a result, there were a number of fans that were pleased with her demonstration of support, but there were some people that responded with negative & hateful comments, indicating their disappointment and disgust with the display:
“Really to support the gays I will NOT support you any more!!! It’s a sad day ;(,”
“Gay is WRONG there is no way around it..it is still wrong…”
"Wow....really...I think it is funny that majority of the people on here for equality are gay...." the post read. "I'm sorry but being gay is wrong....whether you want to believe that or not is up to you...but there will be a judgement day and you will have to answer to being gay...Gay is WRONG there is no way around it..it is still wrong..."
Kelly has yet to respond to these comments (and maybe she should just ignore them). Perhaps it's fitting these comments are coming in light of this new single. People Like Us is about sticking together and giving a voice to those that have been disenfranchised. I don't know about anyone else, but I feel like this song is even more empowering now.
"We come into this world unknown
But know that we are not alone
They try and knock us down
But change is coming, it's our time now"
