What kind of sensationalism? What kind of confirmation bias?
Earth has a history of violent weather, cataclysmic events that has made species extinct/significantly impacted ecosystems, changed the geological make up of the Earth, among other things that would make 2013 look tame. This is completely normal, and nothing compared to the extreme conditions on Earth during its infancy, and nothing compared to what Earth will experience in the future.

Its scary to see where the world is headed.
