If a songwriter does a song for another artist, they record a demo of the song to present to the artist. That's just the instrumental and the songwriter singing the song, and it's unmastered. Example:
If someone is writing their own song, then the demo is basically the same thing: the instrumental and the singer singing the original lyrics and melody, unmastered. I can't think of an example rn but yeah.
After the demo is done and the artist has a general understanding of what the song will be, they may go back and alter lyrics, melodies, the production, work on vocal arranging, etc, and will record the final mastered version.
