A pack of good-looking brothers with moves that rival the Jackson Five, B5 (short for the last name Breeding) made their debut two years ago with their self-titled album that was so popular it cultivated a fan base responsible for starting a riot at a 2005 concert in a Minneapolis mall.
Now older and a little bit wiser, Dustin, 19, Kelly, 18, Patrick, 16, Carnell, 15, and Bryan, 13, spoke with Chronicmagazine.com about their crazy fans, their removal from the Scream Tour IV and their response to criticism about their age.
Chronicmagazine.com: One of the coolest things about you all is that you are brothers. Do you think that it’s easier or harder to be in the industry as a family?
Kelly: I think it’s actually easier you know, because for one, we can’t go anywhere, we just go to our rooms. No matter what kind of argument we get into, we’re family, so it’s family first, always.
Chronicmagazine.com: How did you manage to get signed to Bad Boy Records at such a young age?
Kelly: When we were shopping around for a label, we knew a guy who was real good friends with Puff, and he took us out to Ohio one time and Puff was at his hotel and we actually just performed for him in the hotel, just singing and dancing off of a little boom box, and he was just chillin’, sitting back, kickin’ and after the performance he wanted to sign us right then and there.
Chronicmagazine.com: Have you all finished school?
Kelly: We’re all done with school except for Bryan. He still has a couple of years to go…He’s private-schooling/home-schooling.
Chronicmagazine.com: You guys appeared in the movie The Guardians last year. Do you have any plans to be in movies in the future?
Kelly: We’d love to be in movies. As far as right now we don’t have anything going on, but Bryan has this thing.
Bryan: I am doing something with Cartoon Network called Fried Dynamite, I’m going to do the hosting of the show, it’s in August, and I’m just hosting, doing countdowns and doing shows. It’s great because I love Cartoon Network!
Chronicmagazine.com: Your tour starts tomorrow, are you excited to be back on the road?
Bryan: Lots of breaking, we’ve been waiting for it, writing a lot of stuff down, it will be crazy.
Chronicmagazine.com: Are your parents going too?
Bryan: Our mom is going with us because she’s our stylist and stuff, and plus, our mom never missed a day, she is always with us.
Chronicmagazine.com: Your last album was released two years ago. Do you feel like you’ve grown and matured as a group since then?
Kelly: Yeah, we’ve really got to set up on this last album. Two years ago we didn’t really have much of a say-so on what went on the album because, you know, we were new artists and everything, but you know, we’ve actually been out for two years and we’ve been getting a lot of new attention from the new album and during the development time we got to write a couple of new songs that we are really happy with. We can’t wait.
Chronicmagazine.com: What happened with T.I and the Scream Tour this year? At one point you were going to do it, and then I read somewhere that it wasn’t going to happen.
Kelly: Well, when they said that, it was kind of up in the air because we’re discussing about it but then we decided not to do it because we were going to do the Russ Parr Bus Tour. The Scream Tour, it turned into a different demographic than what it usually is, it’s a little more mature and there are a lot of older artists and they wanted an older audience too, so, we decided not to do it.
Chronicmagazine.com: With the five of you, is it hard to get everyone on the same page? Do you have like a captain or a leader who has the final word if you get into arguments?
Kelly: There isn’t really a leader or whatever, but most of the people that tell everyone to get together is Patrick or Kelly. It’s sometimes me, sometimes Patrick. It’s mostly me and Patrick.
Patrick: …I’m going to give you the straight run down right now. Me and Carnell make up the steps, right, the person who always calls everyone on their phones and tells them to come home- that’s me, that’s me baby. Patrick, I do all that. (laughing). I whip them into shape!
Chronicmagazine.com: Have you had any experiences with crazy fans yet?
Patrick: Oh yeah, we love our fans, man, even the crazy ones. We’ve got the fans that are screaming in your face when you’re on stage and we’ve got the really crazy fans that tap into our phones and our emails and stuff, too.
Chronicmagazine.com: So when you aren’t on the road, what do you do for fun?
Patrick: We are big gamers, we play games a lot. Me and Carnell like to play basketball. We’re like other kids our age, we do what other kids do, like go to the mall and the movies, stuff like that. We like to get clothes, try to get hook-ups for clothes.
Chronicmagazine.com: What kind of music are you listening to now?
Patrick: We listen to all kinds of music. Rapper-style, we like Kanye West, Lil’ Wayne, Lupe Fiasco, Jay Z, Amy Winehouse, J-Moss, Daft Punk. I am actually listening to Story of the Year. I don’t know if they are still hot, but I like their music.
Chronicmagazine.com: How do you respond to the criticism that you are just too young to be doing what you’re doing?
Patrick: You know, everyone has their opinion. That’s why the album is called “Don’t Talk Just Listen,” because everyone is talking all the time and we just say to everyone: before you judge us for our age or whatever, listen to the album and find out where we’re coming from.
Pretty much a boy band that Diddy thought he would attempt to remake. And is B5 really doing well? I like their single but I've heard it not one time on the radio.
Just calling it how I see it, since they're with Diddy, the King of Under-Promotion.
Lol! B5 would probably get that high if Diddy did promote them. Without Diddy you're looking at no higher than top 40 unless Hydraulics mysteriously bl0ws up.
