Whenever I hear a song that's completely throwback like this or most of her work (imo) I wonder if the reason people enjoy it is because it's actually good, which is subjective, or because it's pandering to nostalgia.
In cases of nostalgia I wonder what would happen if the song existed in the time of the aesthetics and sounds its aping: would it stand out and do well? Or would it disappear into the haze of all the similarly arranged and sung songs brandishing the same tell-tale elements that make it so reminiscent of that era? In the case of this song, I suspect the latter.
