Not really. Criminal was the fan favorite in Femme Fatale and probably it was destined to perform that way. To counter your argument about a fan-voted single, take If U Seek Amy for example. Just like Criminal, it was the fan favorite in Circus, and yet it went Top 20 in US (also certified Platinum) and many other markets around the world.

I guess it's just a matter of the quality of the tracks in the album (though I'm only saying that I like If U Seek Amy than Criminal since it's more of a bop)? If in Britney's next album, an If U Seek Amy-like track will be chosen as single by the fans, I bet it will do well too.

I don't think fans have that kind of a big voice when it comes to chosing singles, but yes, Criminal was a really bad single choice.

Sis. If U Seek Amy is an anthem. That was probably the smartest thing the Army has ever done. It would have been top 10 if she knew how to pomote.

That's exactly my point, Sis. It's all about the quality of the tracks that would entice the Army. That's why if in Britney's upcoming era, and the fans should choose the 3rd/4th single, it will entirely depend on the tracks in the album that will entice them.

Is Criminal a prime example of why fans shouldn't pick singles? No. It's really a case-to-case basis.

The Army have good taste in choosing singles, though, Criminal and If U Seek Amy are great songs (though I prefer the latter).

I think a fan-chosen single is fine to end an era (particular a long and/or successful one), OR if we're talking about an album where literally any song would be successful. Take Gaga during TF(M). Those albums were so radio-friendly and there was such massive hype surrounding Gaga that it would've been hard to have a complete flop single even if she intentionally tried to fail. But with BTW I totally disagreed with all the fans who thought Scheiße should've been released--like the majority of the tracks on BTW, it was too weird for radio imo.

However, I will never ever ever get over Push and Shove not being a single That's one instance where I feel like fans were totally right and could've been a big hit for No Doubt.
