Unreal Engine 4 and Battlefield 4's next-gen Frostbite Engine will not be able to run on Nintendo's latest console, according to their respective developers.
The next-gen Frostbite Engine, which powers Battlefield 4, will not run on Nintendo's latest console, according to series head Patrick Bach.
He said: "“The biggest problem we have right now is we don't want to back down from what we see as our low spec machines.
“We right now don't have support for the Wii U in the Frostbite engine. The reason for that is it takes development time."
Unreal Engine 4 will also not work on the Gamepad-toting console, meaning the machine could miss out on a host of potential ports in future.
Epic co-founder Mark Rein told Digital Spy when asked about whether the studio is supporting Wii U: "Ha ha ha, no. I mean, sorry, it's not really a correct answer. We're not.
"We have Unreal Engine 3 for the Wii U. Right? And Unreal Engine 3 is powering all kinds of amazing games, still lots of games are being made with Unreal Engine 3.
"We announced today about a new Unreal Engine 3 licence. Unreal Engine 3 doesn't disappear because of Unreal Engine 4. But our goal for Unreal Engine 4 console-wise is next-gen consoles.
"That's really what our energies are focused on. If you want to make a Wii U game, we have Unreal Engine 3, and it's powering some of the best games on the Wii U already."
Oops. Nintendo were claiming this time around they were going to have all the support from third party too.
Most of these companies just probably can't be bothered to focus on the Wii U gamepad anyway. It's cool but really unnecessary. As much as I love them, Nintendo consoles will always be that "console on the side" for their first party games.
He later went on to say if a developer wanted to use Unreal 4 for their game and put it on the Wii U they could. They just themselves won't be porting it over. EA and Nintendo have some beef going on so them not getting Battlefield 4 is not surprising .

It's sad that this became so true. I feel that if they had been more aggressively competitive in the traditional sense this could have been avoided.
