Gaga's injury is in the hip joint. You can't walk without putting pressure on that. The point of the wheelchair is to prevent as much stress on the injury as possible by removing the need to move her lower body.

Also, I'm assuming she can use the wheelchair when thinks she's going to be putting pressure on it for an extended period of time because she can already walk.
