Simon Cowell is returning to The X Factor in a bid to turn round last year’s ratings flop – but he won’t be coming back for good.
The Saturday night ITV show had average audiences of 8.9million last series, down two million from 2011 when Cowell left to launch the US version.
He said: “I won’t be back full time but I will have an appearance. A little bit – probably by satellite.”
Cowell, 55, announced his big shake-up as rival talent show The Voice returned to TV screens last night.
He said: “We’ll come back bigger and better and stronger to try to beat them. There are going to be changes that will give everybody what they want.”
Sharon Osbourne, 60, is expected to come back to replace Tulisa Contostavlos, 24, on the judging panel, sitting alongside Gary Barlow, 42, Nicole Scherzinger, 34, and Louis Walsh, 60.
8.9 million viewers isn't anything to scoff at though
But Simon, Sharon, Gary, and Louis Lucky Nicole is loved and slightly younger. I think someone like Jessie J should have been on X Factor instead of the voice because the judges are getting so old that the young viewers might feel a bit...meh
We have reason to dislike him when he was the one that put through Frankie Cocozza in Series 8 and put Christopher Maloney up for the wildcard vote in Series 9.

The panel should be
Simon, Sharon, Nicole and Robbie.
wuttt. You say they need a younger judge but then say the panel should have Robbie Williams who's nearly 40?
