Devin Velez: 'We all know Nicki wants a girl to win'
Brian Mansfield4:38p.m. EDT March 29, 2013
It's a girl's year on American Idol -- and the guys know it.
"We all know that Nicki [Minaj] wants a girl to win -- it's okay," says Devin Velez, the singer most recently ousted from the show. "But we have our own opinions about Nicki, too. It goes both ways."
(On Monday, the Idol judge said a guy had no chance of winning his year and named Ange Miller, Kree Harrison and Candice Glover as the competition's front-runners.)
Curtis Finch Jr. and Paul Jolley went home in the first weeks of the final rounds. Velez joined them this week following a calamitous group performance Wednesday he says "most definitely" contributed to his elimination from the show Thursday.
"I think my solo performance was definitely an A+," says the 18-year-old singer from Chicago, whose syncopated, behind-the-beat rendition of Tracks of My Tears drew raves from the judges and from Smokey Robinson. However, "the group performance was so disastrous, and also after my solo performance, that it was the last the judges and the viewers remembered.
"It hurt us in the end, specifically me."
The rendition of I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch) that Velez sang with Lazaro Arbos and Burnell Taylor was one of the most dreadful ever heard at this stage in an Idol season, more closely resembling a Hollywood Week train wreck, with at least one singer missing a cue and things going downhill from there. Afterwards, a furious Minaj lit into the trio.
"I don't know what that was but I'm going to act like I didn't see it or hear it, okay?" she said, specifically targeting Arbos, the singer who appeared to have forgotten his line, for also being "flat at as pancake." She ended by telling all three of them to "Get off the stage!"
Velez didn't disagree with Minaj, "though I think she went to the extreme. That should not happen this far into the competition." However, "when she said, 'Get off the stage,' I think that was just Nicki being Nicki."
As Minaj castigated the group, Velez reminded himself of some advice from his mother. "The way my mother raised me was whenever someone is correcting you or giving you comments that are derogatory and you know it's not about you, then you shouldn't feel offense," he says. "When she was saying thing like you were flat, off-pitch and didn't know the words -- well, I wasn't flat, I wasn't off-pitch and I did know the words, so I knew she wasn't addressing me."
So what did happen during I Can't Help Myself? "We're not going to throw anybody under the bus," Velez says. "I know that I knew my lines and knew my part. I can say that I tried saving it. Maybe the pressure got the best of us.
"I think we all have our bad nights performing."
Even though Velez found himself near the bottom of the voting in the first weeks of the finals, he didn't add extra pressure to improve his standing. "When you over-think things, you can show it on stage and you can hear it in your once, which is never good."
As for getting eliminated in a week where he knew he performed well? "Man, it wasn't as disappointing as everyone make its sound," he says. "It's surprising to me that I'm doing as well as I am. I'm not ashamed, I'm not nervous about anything, nor do I have any regrets."
On the bright side, Velez has received all sorts of mail and other items from fans, including a large, inflatable yellow ball with Bible verses on it that arrived yesterday. "I'm thinking, 'How am I going to get this ball back to Chicago?'" he says.
Like Velez, all the Idols gets loads of mail from viewers. "Angie gets a lot of fan mail, and so does Lazaro," he says. "Kree gets so much."
For now, Velez plans to buckle down and start writing songs with the hope of getting to perform one on teh summer tour. "I know a lot of us are writers," he says. "I'm an early writer. I have one or two songs I've written that I think are good enough to pursue. I haven't shown them to anyone yet.
"I think I've got to step it up. I'm going to have to write something that will last for decades."

At least Devin knows the true tea. Though I highly doubt he'll score a song that will last for decades

This child can't handle criticism at ALL. He, like last week's elim Paul, seem to think the judges are there to shower them with love and positivity.
Ears is a dumbass and he won't make it in this industry.

Not just Nicki wants a girl to win, the Idol producers wanted it since the beginning of the season. The highest Devin could even dream of making is maybe top 6 anyway, so he can just stay pressed tbh..

Damn literally one after another. They need to learn how to accept criticism and understand where the judges are coming from.
