NEWS

DreamWorks Animation's The Croods—their first movie being released by 20th Century Fox—earned over $6 million from preview shows in Russia, Mexico, and a handful of smaller markets this weekend. Aside from Russia and Mexico, it is also reaching Brazil, Germany, Italy, Spain and the U.K. (along with around 40 other territories) next weekend, and it will surely claim the top spot.

DreamWorks Animation's The Croods took first place with an estimated $11.6 million from 4,046 locations on opening day. That's a bit better than Rio ($10.34 million), but slightly below How to Train Your Dragon ($12.1 million). For the three-day weekend, it's likely that The Croods winds up above $40 million, which is a good start ahead of the Easter/Passover holidays.

The Croods grossed an estimated $44.7 million from 4,046 locations. Among recent original DreamWorks Animation movies, it's about even with 2010's How to Train Your Dragon ($43.7 million) and Megamind ($46 million), and a vast improvement over November's Rise of the Guardians (which took 11 days to get to $44 million).
This is without a doubt a good start for The Croods, though it was hard to imagine it going much lower. The movie had a competent marketing effort, and benefited from the fact that the only other 2013 animated movie so far was February's modest Escape From Planet Earth. With an "A" CinemaScore and no serious competition until May, The Croods is in a very good position, though it would be shocking if it came close to matching How to Train Your Dragon's $217.6 million.
The audience was 57 percent female, and surprisingly skewed older (55 percent were 25 years of age and up). 3D ticket sales only accounted for 38 percent of the gross, which is an incredibly low number for the format.

Coinciding with its solid domestic debut, The Croods opened in around 60 percent of the international marketplace and scored a very good $62.4 million. With the Easter holidays coming up, the movie is well-positioned to be an overseas hit for DreamWorks Animation and Fox International.
Including lucrative previews, Russia and Mexico were the highest-grossing territories for The Croods with $12.7 million and $8.7 million, respectively. It also performed well in the U.K. ($8.1 million), Brazil ($4.2 million), Germany ($4.2 million), Italy ($4.1 million) and Spain ($3.3 million). Among these major markets, the 3D share was highest in Germany (78 percent) and Russia (74 percent) and lowest in Mexico (40 percent) and Spain (20 percent).
The Croods expands in to 19 more territories, including Australia, this upcoming weekend. Based on this start, it's reasonable to expect The Croods to earn at least as much as How to Train Your Dragon ($277.3 million), and it could even get lose to Rio ($341 million).

Just saw this movie yesterday! I loved it. The Animation was incredible and the characters were great. Definitely a solid release. Should have tremendous success in the U.S. and worldwide. Hopefully a lot better than Rise of the Guardians.
