Penny, 44, brought Adele up alone after her Welsh dad walked out when she was just three.
But while money was tight, there was no shortage of music and laughter in her life.
A friend said: “Penny was great fun and gave Adele a brilliant childhood. She was a bit of a hippy and surrounded herself with musicians and artists and was always off to festivals. There were some great parties in those days. Penny is a fantastic guitar player and everyone would drink and play music into the early hours.

“There were always loads of kids running around enjoying themselves.
“Adele and the other kids would put on shows and sing for all the adults. All the kids were good singers but you would never have guessed back then that she would go on to be so successful.”
The 24-year-old star is now one of the biggest solo artists on the planet with an estimated fortune of £23 million. But Rumour Has It that back then she was just like any other fun-loving kid.

Our pictures show Adele camping with her mum and friends at a festival in the Forest of Dean in 1993, having her face painted and playing with other kids.

Adele shot to fame in 2008 with her critically-acclaimed first album 19.
Her second album 21, released in 2011, produced the hits Rolling In The Deep, Someone Like You and Rumour Has It, and went to No1 in 26 countries.
She has won nine Grammys, a Golden Globe and most recently an Oscar for Bond theme Skyfall. But she has shunned the celebrity lifestyle and stayed true to her roots.

Adele — who gave birth to son Angelo last October — turned down an invite to Elton John’s swanky post-Oscar party last month and went home instead.
And she prefers spaghetti hoops in front of the telly to posh restaurants.
Born Adele Laurie Blue Adkins in 1988, the star lived in Tottenham, North London, until she was nine and later moved into a rundown flat in West Norwood, South London.

Her mum — a freelance masseuse and furniture-maker — encouraged her daughter’s musical career and enrolled her in the Brit School in Croydon when she was 13.
Adele was in the same class as fellow singers Leona Lewis and Katie Melua.
Adele’s big break came when talent spotters saw a video clip of her performing on her MySpace page.
