A song that's unique in tone and theme and is a moderate success as a leading single then a second single being the smash follow-up? Or the opposite? I could see the second thing happening if only because 1D is going to need to overcome the flop that is Kiss You, and possibly the third single (since I see no obvious smash).

They NEED their lead single to smash on radio. This is not optional.
After the flops from TMH they will have 0 momentum going into next era, if their lead single doesn't smash their album probably won't match TMH's sales. At that point it will be very clear to the people who run radio that 1D are done as radio artists..... so even if their 2nd single is amazing they won't give it a chance.
