BoTB '13 Week 1: The British Are Coming!
I didn't notice before how utterly British (four of the nine acts hail from the United Kingdom) this week is. How many Britons will make it into the next round? It's up to you all.
Radiohead, performing Idioteque
Pictureplane, performing Trancegender
Pink, performing Who Knew
Kelly Clarkson, performing Because of You
Adele, performing Someone Like You
Katy B, performing Easy Please Me
Muse, performing Madness
Beck, performing Girl
Janelle Monae, performing BaBopByeYa
Here's where it gets fun!
Listen to all nine songs, comment on them, and rank them. The song you like the MOST gets a 9; the song you like the LEAST gets a 1. Simple enough, right?
Have fun! Rankings due by Friday.

It gets better! Especially for you in the coming week.
Nine artists are playing next week, but you all can only vote for four (five are cherry picks; Carlton, read my subliminals here). Here they are:
m83
Animal Collective
Dirty Projectors
Ellie Goulding
Send me a PM of your four favorite songs by these acts, ranked of course. Cheerio!

9 - Idioteque - This was the song that really got me into Radiohead. It's the perfect example of their artsy fartsy, yet easily accessible sound.
8 - Girl - Not the best pick for him but it's to be expected. I love the morbid lyrics tied with an almost romantic sound. Beck is awesome.
7 - Easy Please Me - I used to not be that into this song, but something in the last couple months clicked. It's a great declaration of who she wants as a lover.
6 - Madness - One of their very best singles. It does the "Pop-step" thing way better than any other song has done it so far.
5 - Trancegender - Love the title, love the vocals.
4 - BaBopByeYa - Ugh, this is her first pick? It's probably my least favorite track on the album, and could have 2 minutes cut off of it tbh. Overrated, but enjoyable.
3 - Someone Like You - It's the worst of the best on here, I guess.
2 - Who Knew - Good writing, terrible production. It's very clunky and hasn't aged well but P!nk does a good job on the vocals.
1 - Because of You

Yep!
It's a very ballad heavy week this week. Hopefully that helps out some of the outlier tracks.

9 Because Of You - I don't particularly care for it but it's familiar so it doesn't cause my ears pain like the rest
8 Madness - never listened to them before but I really like this
7 Who Knew - same as Kelly but Pink is worse
6 Someone Like You - ^ again
5 Easy Please Me - started off nice but fell off when she started singing
4 Girl - qt chorus, that's about it
3 Trancegender - was ok I guess? I don't even remember it 5 minutes later
2 BaBopByeYa - mess
1 Idioteque - literal NOISE
cackling at me and madonnas having like reversed ranks

Looks like fun. How were the artists in each round picked? As well as the songs? Could anyone vote and participate (because from what I see so far, I have a feeling Beck and Katy B will need my support)?

Post them here, along with your comments. They can be well thought out, like this:

I was so ready for a Missy-Madonna-Mary top three and then Girls and Cheryl Cole came along and slayed me with songs that I had never heard before. (I also forget much too often how awesome Roisin Murphy is.) And I sort of feel bad about putting two such fantastic classics at the bottom of my list, but this was a really strong week.
Girls, performing Lust for Life: 10
Killer guitar riff. Awesome hand claps. Harmonica solo. Yes yes YES! I am in love.
Missy Elliot, performing Get Ur Freak On: 9
No one was on Timbaland's level at the turn of the new millennium; this beat is one of the most ******* incredible things I have ever heard. And the way Missy's flows finds and exploits every little quirk in the production is an insane thrill ride. This song still gets me every time I hear it.
Cheryl Cole, performing Waiting: 8
I was initially turned off by Cheryl's constipated singing in the first verse, but damn, that chorus is magical! When she first belted "In aNOther WORLD," I just about jizzed in my pants.
Madonna, performing Get Together: 7
The trippy production is extraordinary—a state of bliss tempered by a hint of sweet sadness. It's a messy mass of nearly-indistinguishable synths and beats, but it feels so good washing over your soul.
Roisin Murphy, performing You Know Me Better: 6
I love the darkly ethereal vibe of this track; there's a great tension and release between the verses and chorus. Plus, anything that derives inspiration from '80s synth-pop is all good by me.
Mary J Blige, performing Family Affair: 5
Such a perfect diva anthem. Is it possible to listen to this one without wanting to strut? Also, "hateration" is probably my favorite word coined by a pop star.
Erykah Badu, performing Windowseat: 4
Groovy, baby! I love Erykah's whole vibe; she's so effortlessly funky and cool. This song doesn't go much of anywhere, but I can dig that, especially because this is pure gorgeousness.
The Saturdays, performing All Fired Up: 3
Ooh, that's some hot **** right there! I know a lot of you U.K. pop fans hate the Saturdays with a fiery passion, but I wouldn't mind this playing at the club all day, errday.
Shania Twain, performing Man! I Feel Like a Woman!: 2
I forget about Shania, because I don't listen to any of her music, but this is definitely my favorite song from her. That horn hook is infectious, and the whole concept is very cute. I feel like there's wasted potential for a true feminist anthem, though.
Pink, performing Get The Party Started: 1
Way better than I remembered. I can appreciate Pink's attempts to be a "serious pop star," but I actually had a lot of fun listening to this song (COW BELL!). I'd be curious to see her make music like this or "God is a DJ" again.

As wonderfully irate as this ...

Roisin Murphy You Know Me Better
Oh, seriously?! **** all of you (well, a lot of you) and your cold shoulders. I'm simply seething with gay boy rage. SEETHING! So, yeah, I've finished my shameless descent into meltdown mode, but I really shouldn't be this upset because, one, I'm not Marnie and this isn't the Games section, and two, the heartless dismissal of this masterpiece comes as no great surprise. I knew it was coming. I know you guys better than you know yourselves. I know you the best. I know you guys better than you know yourselves. I know what to expect. For example, I know that some of you remain completely oblivious to the very universal and affecting theme, that, had you been paying attention, might have interested you. I also know that some of you would have preferred (or pretended to prefer) something from Ruby Blue, because, as an album consisting primarily of noise and nonsense, its songs are full of integrity and "great ideas." I also know that many of you would have had a more favorable opinion of this particular track had it been attributed to a certain mononymous, Swedish, pixie. (Yeah, that's right - I'm taking this out on Robyn! #Petty #IDGAF #ButIObviouslyDo #AreHashtagsCool?) (10,000,000).

Or as simple as madonnas's. Have fun!
