I've been seeing a vocal coach for 6 weeks and I got a little better. She says it may take a year to get to where I want to be. How far can vocal lessons take you? I probably won't be a vocal genius like Rihanna and madonna but I want to be a decent singer since I want to do alot of dance music and electro stuff.

Can it take a horrible singer to decent?

not really answering your question but I've always wondered this: what exactly do you do with a vocal coach? I've always had this like preconception of how people are taught to sing but I actually have no clue how vocal coaching works when it's done like over a long period of time like you're doing it.

Well what I do in vocal lessons so far is she plays notes on the piano and I try to mimic the note with my voice. We go up and down the scales and at the end of a lesson, I sing a song.

Sometimes she asks me to do wierd noises like scream AAAAAAAAA or meow like a cat to the different notes of the piano

you need to learn how to breathe properly, that's the most important thing i think
if you don't take lesson, obviously you don't care how you breath in when you sing.

It depends on your tone cause a lot of people can hold notes, but in my case. When i took vocals lessons, i discovered how to shift songs to make it my own, because if copy artist way of singing can damage your voice.

But anyways, a genre of music sometimes picks you even though you don't like, my voice works great for Rock/R&B.

If you don't have the voice then obviously not far. Vocal coaches teach you breathing techniques and control.

But if you don't believe in your ability, you'll never be satisfied.

They can teach you how to be in tune and how to use vibrato but they CAN'T teach you how to express yourself through music. Being a textbook singer isn't always a good thing. It doesn't make you an artist. People seem to forget that.

Vocal lessons give you an understanding of how to properly use your voice in a technical appropiate way, which can help you extend your vocal range and breath control during singing. Singing through the throat can damage your voice in a great way, but it's also part of one's very own vocal technique and is widely used in most genres, except for very technical genres like opera, classical music, country and also Soul music to an extent (singing from the chest, instead from the throat). I took vocal lessons for 2 yrs when I was younger to develop a sense of "understanding my voice" as well as creating a platform that I could work on and create my own technique as a singer.

Probably very far. No shade here. Rihanna used to BLOW and now she sounds at least decent with most of her performances. I'm assuming she took some lessons.

They can't really teach you to sing, but if you already can sing they can teach you to sing well. You get taught breathing techniques, how to warm up etc but there isn't much else they can do and all those things could probably be found on the internet tbh

To sing like Rihanna and Madonna? You should see results now though.

I'm classical trained, why? Because I think classical vocal lessons learn best how to use your voice, right breath support etc.
As a classical singer you'll be able to sing more in resonance and it's known that opera singers don't need a mic to sing, so you learn how to sing with volume. I don't sing classical songs though, I just use the technique to sing the songs I want.

6 weeks is too early actually, unless you want to be an artist like Rihanna or something. You'll see you'll get better week by week. Take 6 months (each week 1 lesson).

Tip: don't get frustrated when something isn't going right. Vocal lessons is with ups and downs when finding your own voice.

Is it hard and expensive to get classical lessons? I want to get some in Valencia, and some back here in Sheffield too.
