He's a strong media presence, but it's for the wrong reasons. His commercial success and popularity among music listeners are declining. He got hits, but they weren't gigantic hits, and his album sales and overseas tour receipts are "shocking". I don't know why anyone here would be surprised, though. Didn't ATRL predict this? One Direction will suffer a similar downward spiral, except people will just forget about them.
