Nokia's In Trouble As Microsoft Creates "Surface Phone"
Quote:
Just ahead of the launch of Windows Phone 8, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop said he had "no indications" that Microsoft was building its own Surface phone, even welcoming Microsoft to join the ranks as "a stimulant to the ecosystem." Nokia has never made any formal risk statements that Microsoft could build its own smartphone, but this week the company's tone changed somewhat.
In a filing with the SEC, spotted by ZDNet, Nokia acknowledged that Microsoft could very well be building its own smartphone hardware. "Microsoft may make strategic decisions or changes that may be detrimental to us. For example, in addition to the Surface tablet, Microsoft may broaden its strategy to sell other mobile devices under its own brand, including smartphones. This could lead Microsoft to focus more on their own devices and less on mobile devices of other manufacturers that operate on the Windows Phone platform, including Nokia," says the filing by Nokia.
NEW WORDING FROM NOKIA, BUT ARE THERE NEW MOVEMENTS?
Nokia has never used such wording before, suggesting that the possibility of a Surface phone is a more serious consideration in Espoo than ever before. Nokia also acknowledges a new risk that Microsoft could reduce investment in Windows Phone or even discontinue it. Nokia states "if Microsoft reduces investment in that operating system or discontinues it, our smartphone strategy would be directly negatively affected by such acts." This scenario is far less likely than a Surface phone, but it's a new admission by Nokia regardless. The SEC filing is all related to risk, so such wording is common, but Nokia did not have the same statements in its previous filing last year.
Rumors emerged about a potential Surface phone late last year, but sources informed us that Microsoft was considering the option as a "Plan B." We're told that the same strategy is in place today, but that Microsoft is in the early stages of concept and prototyping what a Surface phone would eventually look like. That doesn't mean the company is committed to bringing such a product to market. Microsoft regularly prototypes hundreds of products it never launches, Courier is a great example of that. Still, Nokia seems to be more concerned about the prospects of Microsoft extending its hardware reach to phones, so perhaps Microsoft's "Plan B" is moving forward ever so slowly.

Nokia isn't in anything.
The surface phone will end up like the Surface, the Kin & the Zune

You never know. WP is still "new" for the general public, if Microsoft play their cards right and promote it enough (+ a decent price), they might steal Nokia spotlight.

No worries. Android will welcome Nokia with it's great hardware capability.
If this is true then it's disappointing that Microsoft will cut off Nokia like that. They helped Windows Phone a lot. Without them, WP will never have this tiny take off and will be a big failure like the Zune.
Microsoft isn't so smart to do this.

And I had a Nokia before the S1, and would I bought a Nokia too if they had gone Android in 2010, but now it's too late, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Samsung is the only Android company that isn't struggling right now. HTC's demise is imminent and Motorola is invisible. There are Huawei and ZTE that are being Successful because of cheap, low quality hardware.
And the companies that I have mentioned don't have as much WW presence as Nokia (or Samsung and Apple, for that matter). So I think Nokia would be the 3rd/4th android OEM.

But the thing is Microsoft might discontinue Windows Phone in future that spell trouble right there.
I used to love Nokia. They should have gone with android or stick with their own operating system (Meego which was revolutionary).

It's slowly growing though. I don't think they should abandon it, it has lots of potential.
And BB10 is a Meego clone, it's not even funny.

And? Samsung is in the process of swallowing the whole android market whole. Idk why you think Nokia's brand is big enough to make enough strides in android.

Google is probably talking to Nokia right now about going Android and probably have it be the first line with 4.3, along with the Galaxy S4. Let's be real. Nokia's gonna be fine.
If anyone, Microsoft is the one that's gonna be screwed. Nokia's design was what was keeping the Windows mobile OS afloat.

Nokia will be fine. I'm just really sad Microsoft is doing this. They better make the Surface phone available on every carrier even tracfone if they expect people to buy this ****.

Can't wait for the Nokia Catwalk!
Nokia just released a bunch of low and mid-tier phones. They've won awards. They're actually amazing for low tier phones. They were just sleeping for a bit before, they'll dominate again. Not to mention two new flagships this year... yeah. Nokia has nothing to worry about.
Good luck to Microsoft with that phone though...

Actually, back in '11, both Google and Windows fought a lot to get Nokia on their side.
And google is looking for a company to rival Samsung, and only Nokia has enough magnitude to do so.

Poor Microsoft if they have another flop I think they might give up on hardware completely (good riddance).
If Nokia goes Android I just might get one a Lumia 920 with Android would be awesome. I like WP8's design but the lack of developer support makes me not want one.
