Microsoft fined $731 million over Internet Explorer fiasco
AMSTERDAM (AP) — The European Union Commission fines Microsoft €561 million ($733 million) for breaking the terms of an earlier agreement to offer users a choice of internet browser.
Microsoft thought it had put its regulatory woes behind it with the 2009 settlement in which it paid €860 million and promised to give Windows users the option of choosing another browser rather than having Internet Explorer automatically installed.
But Microsoft failed to stick to the deal for some 15 million installations of Windows 7 in Europe from May 2011 until July 2012. The company acknowledged the failure and said it was a mistake.
The commission's top regulator, Joaquin Almunia, said negotiated settlements are vital for enforcement, and this was the first time a company had failed to keep its word.
having to pay all that just cos you get IE preinstalled on windows? that's insane imo, it takes like two seconds to open IE and just download another browser yourself if thats what you'd prefer.
i understand why they were told to give users an option, but being fined that much money for failing to do so is ludicrous.
How are you able to download another web browser when you don't have one in the first place?
They made an AGREEMENT to let users choose a browser while setting up their computer. Where'd you put in your username, etc you'd pick which browser you want to use.
They went against a signed agreement. So yes, they got fined for it.
I don't like Microsoft but this is really stupid if people can't even Google "Google Chrome" and download it, that's just laziness. IE is obviously horrible but Microsoft should be able to preinstall whatever they want considering Windows is their product.
Every computer should have this as an option, Macs/Windows/Linux, it should be a requirement
Why should it be on Linux? It doesn't really matter for the antitrust thing for Mac or Linux since they don't completely control the desktop OS market.

That's just dumb for Linux. If you're smart enough to get Linux, then you should be able to easily download another broswer. It's 1.21% of the market too so I mean

But if they're going to download another browser, why not have it as a mandatory option?
Wow I can't even say how stupid this is. Internet Explorer is a free browser pre installed. Users have the freedom to choose their browser. They just have to download it uaong internetexplorer
And correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't Mac computers have Safari pre installed as well?

Safari isn't known for being a piece of **** though.
