Hmm... Well mostly what I've already stated. Taking my mind off of it is what helped me the most. However, I did try other things to make it better.
One way to fight blushing is to build up confidence. (Some say that the issue of blushing is simply an issue of self-confidence, although I think it varies from person to person.) If you're usually afraid to participate in class or something, you should just raise your hand if you definitely know the answer. Or if you're unsure of something and you're afraid to ask a fellow student sitting next to you, I say do it. Take small steps like this and then you'll soon be able to confront teachers and administrators and cashiers without a problem. That's one way of fighting your fear of social interaction: facing it.
Also, remember that there was a time, (like you said), when you didn't have problems with blushing. Surely, you can get back into that mindset if you've had it before.
The funny thing is, mine started when my physics teacher was talking about gravity. And he was like "There's also an attractive force between chilicheese and the kid sitting next to him." (Obviously using our real names.) But when he said that, everybody started laughing, and my crush who was next to me put his arm around my back and I was blushing
so much. From then, I dreaded going to physics class because of that, but I realized that my blushing had become worse and even started to occur in any of my classes. I thought that it would never stop, but you need to realize that if you didn't have a problem with blushing before, there is certainly a way to fix it. The strange thing in my case is that it was practically one event (which I described above) that exploded into a big problem. But thankfully I'm over it.
