If this guy is unsigned then how could he send his music to mainstream radios?
Radio is supposed to play whatever is popular. His song is so popular that it's beyond radio adds and stuff like that. They have to find it and play it or else they are irrelevant.
To be honest, they don't really make that much. If they're independent they have to use their profit to support their tour, hotel, wardrobe, etc. When you're with your label you're covered. You may not get much from your sales, but your label supports you with your tours, and that's where the big $ comes in.
Not really. You can get sponsored, the bigger you are the bigger the sponsorship i.e Pepsi. The label is just using your money to do all those things you claim, so you're paying for it anyway. Being independent allows you to control the money you spend, which is better.
So being independent, and being a big artist=the biggest amount of money.
Universal, Sony and Warner must be in panic. We are experiencing an explosion of song an artist that either belong to an independent label or are independent. Adele, Macklemore, Harlem Shake, Mumford and Sons, Lumineers etc

It would be funny if this song replace Harlem Shake...
It would be 3rd consecutive "unsigned" song getting #1 on Hot 100.
right now #14 on Itunes. It's such a good song too.
Digital is a great equalizer. Anyone can release a song and get 70% royalties from Itunes/AmazonMP3 etc... (just need to pay a small 1 time fee for a distributor). And the internet/social media can help spread the words..
How the hell did "Thrift Shop" catch on without major label support? I mean, It's huge now but how did it get there? Nevertheless, this guy is making major money, more than fairly established artists who are on these big labels. Congrats!
He fought hard! He's been around for many years. He built his name and became sort of big in Seattle first and then social media and youtube helped him a lot. You should buy his music and support him because you know that most of the money you spend go in to his pocket. Not to label executives. You also send a message to big labels that they should chase their shady tactics and let their artists do whatever the want. No force them do recycled things.
