During a popular artist's second era, which was shaping up to be not quite as successful as her first, a song the fans had been begging to get the single treatment was released as the fifth official single from the album.

Despite the artist's hype and prior success, the single didn't take off, with a non-conventional and love-it-or-hate-it music video, few performances, and a peak outside of the Billboard Top 20. This single effectively ended the era.

I think Marry the Night is, by a slim margin. With Nicki, it wasn't as much of a surprise because she didn't want to promote the song at all and effectively ignored it, plus we had already seen Pound the Alarm underperform. With Gaga, considering she's Gaga and after the success of Born this Way, Edge of Glory, and You and I, I'd have thought her single would do much better.

MTN was less successful in airplay & sales but it wasnt a radio candy at all. So its reasonable.

In other hand, VVV, a Dr Luke song failed which is more of a flop to me.

If we look at their standards and previous charting, then it's obviously Gaga. Whilst Gaga hadn't had a single peak outside the top 10 before Marry The Night, it was rare for Nicki to even get a top 10.

If we look out of context, then they're both about the same.
