Sure it was a slip-up, but she could have recovered with the right second single. Judas being released had to have been the dumbest decision they could have possibly made. If they wanted a RedOne single, they could have easily gone with Scheisse (which wouldn't have done well at all as a later single anyway, due to it not being melodic) or Hair (which was melodic enough to stand on its own as a later single).
With Judas, they obviously hoping the controversy would be a selling point, but
A. controversy clearly doesn't sell anymore like it did in the Madge/MJ days
B. the industrial elements were too heavy for radio at that point anyway; it simply didn't fit in sonically
Not saying that they should play it safe and boring, at all.
