Funny that you should bring this up. I remember hearing on NPR a few weeks ago about an all digital public library branch, in some US town. All the books were going to be replaced by tablets, and an elderly woman wrote in to voice her outrage over the concept. She's probably exactly the type of person you're talking about that probably gets by just fine without using digital appliances and prefers physical books. It's the idea of possibly being forced to change rather than choosing to change that bothers her.

Technology has many positive effects, but certain social graces have suffered because of it. You know, like hand written thank you notes, romantic dates who think texting is more romantic or preferable to actual phone calls. Technology has changed how society interacts with one another and not always for the better.

There's a lot of variables that affect the increase in paper consumption. Like for one population size, think about how often you go to the grocery store and they offer you paper. Or the amount of spam mail, which is almost half of what people get. There's too many angles to it.

If people urge for more recycled paper products, companies find ways to not waste paper and use other renewable resources. I think the issue with people that you bring up has to do with the waste of modern industrialism.

And the thing you brought about handwritten notes or whatever I understand wanting that. I'm talking about extremes. I prefer physical to e-books when I'm home, but when I travel I prefer e-books. But to make a whole library e-books is dumb.

I mean technology HAS had negative impacts on society. People becoming meaner through the anonymity of the internet. People becoming more reserved as a result of technological connections replacing actual people connections.

I agree it has made life better...but to an extent.

People like what they grew up with. It's why so many 20-somethings are so nostalgic about the 90's and think it was the greatest decade ever. It's why we think the TV shows of our youth are better then the TV shows on now. It's why we think the Backstreet Boys and the Spice Girls are better then One Direction or Justin Bieber. They grew up without technology so they automatically think their way is superior.

Just watch we will be like them as well. When new things come out when we are old many of us will be saying its stupid. Not all old people are against technology and in fact I think many are actually embracing/using it. I think one thing that people are very quick to say is that whenever new things pop out that replaces old things then that generation who grew up with the older things get pretty defensive. In fact many of us has already displayed this when it comes to television shows.

I think it's all about preference and it's true that old people hates change. If you ask me, i'd rather write a letter than to text a message but the latter is more convenient. I guess the feeling of touching the paper w/ your handwriting on it seemed more personal rather than electronic.

My grandparents and parents act like they can't learn the new technology for some reason. They hate it and I don't know why...I couldn't live without it.

They grew up w/ technology. Computers, tv, radio, nuclear bombs etc. It's just really outdated.

Old people are cute sometimes. I mean the devil!

No one really likes change if you think about it. I still think its pretty crazy how humans switched to cars in the time that they did. I think you'll see us do the same when wearable computing and self driving cars come around.

Yeah. The whole industrial revolution as a whole has had negative effects but also positive. I'm not sure Tim Berners-Lee knew that it'd become like this. For him it must be crazy tho because he's basically impacted 80% or more of the world population somehow and changed their lives.

I agree with some of this. I definitely feel the shows of the 90's >>>> today's shows.
