No I've realized for a long time that there's huge double standards for women especially when it comes to sex. We were just discussing it in Sociology so I thought it would be interesting to discuss it on ATRL since it's something I feel quite strongly about.

I've never seen a popstar flashing a vagina, only breasts. Well, ok, I haven't seen the Madonna photobook. I understand why everyone covers their genitals, no matter the gender - if we all have to hide them equally, it's fine. What I don't get is the oversexualization of almost every inch of female body - breasts, neck, legs. There are many cultures in the world that don't see breasts as something sexual, in fact they don't objectify the whole body, only genitals.
I'm not saying that I want to run around topless all the time (bras are cool and make the day more comfortable), but it would be nice to have the same possibility to take off my shirt in public on a hot day, just like many guys do, without being shamed as an attention seeking ****. When a guy takes his shirt off in public it's cool and stuff, almost every male singer, rapper, musician in the industry did it at least once.
Is there a part of a body that is not called penis and that men can't show because it'd make them "****s"? I don't think so.
|
Now wait, yes in most cultures men chose the woman's fashion... but this is everything but true today. At the end of the day, women have the choice to pick what they wanna wear, do you not? So let's not make this into a conspiracy.

Society is not ready to let patriarchy go. Sexism will be dictating these kind of relations for decades from now i am afraid.

Um, yeah, hi, are you being serious right now? This is the woman who's basically made a career out of condemning other women for their sexuality and shaming them for dressing provocatively. What do you think the vile, vile line about the evil boyfriend-stealing actress who's "better known for the things she does on the mattress" is? What about her You Belong With Me video, in which she crucifies the popular, pretty cheerleader ('cause obviously all flirty cheerleaders must put out and consequently be BAD), and basically delivers the message that you only *really* deserve the guy if you're virginal and conservative?
Much of her discography is either about the evil *****s who have wronged her or the dreamy but misguided (brainwashed by the aforementioned evil *****s, ofc) princes she so desperately pines for. Do you really think that's pro-feminist? This is the woman who thinks she's better than other girls because she doesn't wear ****ing short skirts, and who schemes about convincing grooms to jilt their "snotty" brides at the altar while still expecting her audience to find her honourable and merely sympathetic. Why is it okay for her to do all of these things, but when people call her out on her lunacy and her hypocrisy then SUDDENLY ****-shaming is disgusting to you?
Obviously ****-shaming is horrendous and inexcusable, and she, like any other woman, should be able to have as many partners as she likes without being looked down upon, but don't act like she's some shining beacon of perfection when she's villainized many others for far less than what she's now being "bashed" for (and I think you'll find that few people outside of the Internet are even criticizing her at all).

A long history of sexism and it seems to intimidate people. People should be able to express themselves how they like.

LOL @this ignorance. There is like 1 song in her discography of over 100 that could be considered ****shaming. Hardly that much to say its all she writes about.
YBWM example does not fly because she was presenting a relationship of other people as an observer not her own.
The way she chooses to dress is her own ****ing business and probs just likes it not because she wants to send some message.
Call out her lunacy or whatever the **** (for being a young single girl trying to find love?) but leave ****shaming out of it.
U tried.

It's simple to understand why. I had a discussion about this on another forum, and a poster stated a great analogy: Men are the hunters, women are the prey; the prey is not suppose to attack or launch back at the hunter, they're meant to be passive.
How (straight) men get their respect nowadays is by whoring around with any busy body they see in their path. Women have always been seen as passive, innocent and obedient. (Straight) men's mentality is wired in such a way where they believe dominance comes from mating with a female, which is exactly what childish fools do, sleep around.
It's a sad to say, but I hope it'll fade away soon. There's many other double standards of society besides sexuality, but it's one of the worst though.

Before anybody noticed that she boasts a new beau every other fortnight, you Taylor fans would treat her like some kind of holier-than-thou virtuous angel in a sea of morally depraved harlot temptresses, and had no qualms about her reinforcing the whole virgin/***** complex thing in so much of her work. Now that she's being villainized for her allegedly promiscuous ways, you're acting like she's just some ~m!ssundaztood~ freedom fighter who's being criticized for embracing her sexuality in a male-dominated power structure. "Omg, Tay, those evil jealous haters are so MEAN!" It's just SO hypocritical and callow considering a substantial amount of her body of work thus far has unnecessarily exacerbated the (false) idea that being a **** is a bad thing. She's contributed to the bull**** women have to endure for owning their sexuality. I'm not saying she deserves the hate, 'cause she doesn't -- no one does -- but maybe it's something of a tiny karmic miracle that people aren't just ignoring her apparent double standards anymore.
Anyway, I'm uninterested in continuing this conversation. My opinion isn't the law (it is, however, gospel, but whatevs ) and I truly don't care about yours enough to spend so much as a second more of my time trying to change it. But please don't try to school ME on feminism, thank youuu.

I really only see it on the Internet
Memes, Reddit, 4Chan, Misc section of Bodybuilding (99% of those closeted nerds don't even lift) and 9Gag are really hateful of gays and women Seriously just look at the Misc of BB.com where every single woman is called a sloot and are only used for sex. Disgusting.

Yeah, closeted people, pathetic, real straight people (who are not religious or ultraconservative) are totally cool and mostly irreverent to gays.

Boasts? She has had 6 in 6 years. A lot of BS around her dating is media fabrication to get hits from fools like you.

She is embracing her sexuality? Wut? Because she has worn shorts a couple of times? She all sexed up now??? She has always felt not so comfortable to wear revealing clothes. Its her choice. As a ****ing feminist u should know this. This is not making her better than those people who do wear less clothing....and i am sure she knows that.

I want proof to this ridic claim. WBWM vid? It was not her concept and experience described in there. BTR is the only problematic song. So u better ****ing sit.
Basically what happened is that she dared to date a boyband member. That apparently makes her a **** along with the tabloid fodder about her imaginary previous relationships. When it comes to the real ones there is 0 proof that they were even sexual. So enlighten me again how this is fair to her? Harry has ****ed like 40 girls but i see no concerned shaming articles about him and the possibility of his dick falling off. Its cool. He is young and having fun. #SMH.
Sexism is disgusting when it comes to Rihanna or Miley for dressing too revealingly just as like with Taylor for (allegedly) dating too much. In both of these instances they should be allowed to do what they please without getting crap for it.
To conclude- you have no clue about feminism or Taylor or her body of work and yet you feel like you have a say in the matter of her being ****shamed? You should go into politics. Made it perfectly clear with your dumb**** ignorant posts. So it really is for the best that you are uninterested to continue this convo because so am i.

lol U4EA brought up some valid points.
the point is however, female celebs are put on this high pedestal as being perfect ALL of the time, if you notice, the paparazzi focuses on women much more than their male counterparts. Its quite sad, I would like to see a female entity shake things up, be controversial in a Kanye West sort of sense. I wanna see a female celeb entity not give a ****. Madonna does, to a certain extent, but her music is still tied with the conception of what females should sing about. She doesnt get the same respect as Bruce Springsteen in a general music sense, and they are from the same generation of artists. The general audience is too reluctant to call female musicians geniuses, and the ones that are (Kate Bush for example) arent nearly as celebrated as the men.
