Even if YOU never associated watermelon with black people, there are many other people who do. And it's an American history thing, so I'm not sure if people of other nationalities would associate it with black people. And people have every right to get "faux butthurt" over a stupid stereotype, and it's not even just the watermelon thing that gets people butthurt. It's this picture that alludes that a black man should be caged like he's an animal or a slave. The watermelon just makes this image even more obvious.

Wanda Sykes has a joke where she says that before Obama she went to grocery stores and stared wistfully at whole watermelons before forcing herself to just go to the salad bar and scoop out a bit of already sliced watermelon into a container, but now that we have a Black president, she can just go to the store and leave with a whole watermelon on each shoulder. Then she said she hoped he got a second term, and if he did she was going to Popeyes.

It is FUN to make light of stereotypes. It is ENTIRELY unhealthy to limit ones sense of humor by taking an entire topic and saying "All jokes about this topic are taboo." It does no one any good to do that.


What makes this particular instance of the joke racist is simply that it is coming from a Tea Party bitch who we all know MEANS what she is saying, and that makes all the difference. The issue here is not the CONTENT of the joke, it is the SOURCE and INTENT.
