Starships didn't have a substantial backlash outside the niche markets. It led the album to 1.5M sales. The backlash came from stuff like Stupid Hoe, Roman Holiday at the Grammys, the poor urban single choices, the off-stage dramatics over Twitter and with no-name hip-hop DJs, etc.
Had Nicki just focused on the strengths of the album - the mainstream pop and R&B songs and her international appeal - and dedicated promo to that, the era would have paralleled Katy Perry's Teenage Dream era. The fact it didn't also led to some backlash.
