Does an artist having writing credits or simply writing their own material automatically make their music more heartfelt and genuine? Does it establish a connection that is more genuine than artists singing songs written by songwriters?

I believe that this is illogical. If we as fans all have genuine connections to songs we love, why can't artists have genuine connections to songs that are written for them if they connect to them the same way we do?

It makes it more heartfelt for me because it gives it EXTRA meaning to the song, knowing the artist wrote it based on his or her personal experiences, not someone else doing it for them (even if it still relates to that singer's life).

If they can take an experience like that and turn it into a son that means a lot, it makes it THAT MUCH more special, hence why writing credits AUTOMATICALLY make their music more heartfelt and genuine

Not necessarily. When listening to a song no one thinks of how it was created so if you have a talented heartfelt writer writing your songs then it comes across as more heartfelt then those who don't

But there is no such thing as "more genuine." Something is either real or it is not.

I believe what you're talking about is appreciating lyrical talent and ability, which is subjective anyways. But I would agree that when an artist can write about what they go through in a touching or even clever way, it's more appreciated.

But still... the connection, the actual meaning behind the song, does not change if the singer wrote it or not. That's kind of the whole point of music itself.

My point, in this situation, is that Dolly's version is heartfelt and fans of that version have a genuine connection to it but so does Whitney's version and the fans of her version. Which one's better vocally or commercially is besides the point.

No, but only because for me writting a song = writting a movie, you can be the actor of the movie and KILL IT even if you didn't write any part of it, although it's a great thing if you did that still doesn't make you any more or less of an artist.

So many people on ATRL would be able to say "this song/album is the soundtrack to my life", and have a genuine connection to that song similar to the way an artist has a genuine connection to a song they might not have written, but can identify with anyway.

That analogy is even more illogical. Listeners/music fans ≠ musicians. We don't write the songs we listen to.

If an artist can't manage to write their own stuff I'm automatically disappointed.

I'm not talking about the act of writing music. I'm talking about the connection/emotion/meaning/relationship one person has to music.

For example if you say Rihanna doesn't provide heartfelt music because she doesn't write her own music, you're being a hypocrite because that heartfelt connection one would have with a song is not determined by the politics behind the music.

If Rihanna cannot connect with a song she didn't write, then you can't connect and genuinely enjoy the music Lady Gaga makes because you didn't write it. That would also make you a mindless fan who only stans for the artist and not the music.

It gives them more credibility and acclaim but who cares when you're listening to the song—especially pop.
