Baauer Explains Azealia Banks "Harlem Shake" Squabble
"We told her, 'Please don't release your version.' And she said, 'Well, I'm going to put it online anyway.'"
Last week, "Harlem Shake" producer Baauer found himself in the line of Azealia Banks' bridge-burning fire. She released a remix of the song that generated a thousand memes; Baauer had it removed. Cue Azealia Banks calling him a "faggoot" on Twitter. "I can post emails showing where u gave me permission to use Harlem shake," she fought back. She then Tweeted, "@Diplo just sent me an email saying the reason they won't let my Harlem shake remix fly is because they'd rather have juicy j on it" and "I feel like Harlem shake was a ho with some free ***** and everyone was allowed to **** but me. "
Now, Baauer has responded to Banks. In interview with the Daily Beast, Baauer explained that he had planned to release a version of the song with Banks quite a while ago. But when her verse wasn't up to snuff, he pulled the plug on the collaboration and went ahead with the instrumental version of the song.
"She laid something on 'Harlem Shake' and it was so/so. Didn't love it," he said. "And that was a little while ago, and since all this video stuff happened, our plans all changed. Because of that, we decided to just release the song on its own with no vocal version. So we told her, 'Please don't release your version.' And she said, 'Well, I'm going to put it online anyway.' And we said, 'Please don't. We'd really like it if you didn't.' And she did."
In other Baauer news, he tells the Daily Beast he's working with Aluna Francis from AlunaGeorge and Just Blaze on his upcoming EP that will be released through LuckyMe. He's also potentially working with A$AP Rocky.

This doesn't really justify anything. Thousands of videos on YouTube of people using the song without permission and the one person you condemn is the one you actually worked on it with. What a backstabber.

Well considering that none of them have added vocals (to make the song worse as she did) and that stuff, I would be mad too if I was him

Baauer still makes NO sense, but Azealia could have respected their wishes if he asked her not to post it before she did.

Regardless of whatever blind opinions you have on her additions there are still hundreds of remixes of the song on YouTube. I doubt they'll be going anywhere.

What I'm getting out of this is that Azealia and Baauer worked on this a while ago, and Baauer didn't like Azealia's final work on it, so he decided that he only wanted to release the instrumental version. Cut to now with the song blowing up and Azealia decides to release the version of Baauer's song that he told her not to, and he is against it.
If that's how it went, then I totally understand his position. It's not like Azealia's is any fanmade mix. It's one of the versions of his song that he worked on that he decided he didn't want released, sort of like a demo or an unfinished track or a leak or whatever. It's very understandable that he doesn't want it to released. Any proper artist would respect his wishes!

I'm sure there are many with vocals. I wonder if he would be so bothered if Wayne or Drake did a version.

It doesn't matter if thousands of people post songs without permission, every one of them are technically "wrong" for doing it. And the one person they condemned wasn't just the one they worked with, it was the one they worked with who did leak it. It would not have gotten out if she had not released it. Simple as that.

So it's right that all these people can use/remix the song without permission but the second someone he's worked with releases her version, with vocals, without saying it was the original, he condemns her. So now instead of letting her pretend it was just something she had never released he's let everyone know that she was supposed to be on the official version in the first place. How classy of him.

this. a total dick move by azealia to release her version after they'd requested several times that she don't. if they worked together earlier on his song, and he decided he preferred the version without azealia, she should respect his decision rather than ****ing him over and releasing her version anyway just to hop on the harlem shake bandwagon.

that isn't how it works, though. obviously people are gonna remix it whether he wants them to or not, but he and azealia worked on the track together previously and it's his decision as to which version he wants to release. it's common practice especially among dance artists who collaborate frequently with guest vocalists. for example, david guettas song "titanium", written obviously by sia, originally had mary j blige on the vocals but they went with sias vocals instead. did mary j blige release her version afterwards out of spite of being snubbed? no, because she's classy and above this ********.
azealia released her version out of spite. he has every right to condemn her for it.

But the only reason he's making any money at all right now is because people were "wrong". He owes all of his current, fleeting success to people who used his song without permission. It doesn't matter if she leaked the original, the official version is literally nothing more than just the instrumental to the original. She didn't tell people it was the original, he did. He let her put work into recording it and making a music video for it and he still doesn't let her release her version. Whatever went on behind the scenes this is extremely petty of him.

Dammit. Now this is definitely unprofessional. I don't know why she feels the need to rebel everything. They could have simply scrapped this and did a different track together.
Once again, this is business and you shouldn't take it personal if someone doesn't like your work. Next time, he needs to just use a contract. Which he should have done from the beginning if there was a possibility of him changing his mind.

LORD YES BAAUER! Her verse on this is absolutely TRASH, sorry. I don't understand why she just couldn't put more effort into it and re-write it if he didn't like it. Her ego is stopping her from going on to great things. I guarantee she would of blown up again if she had spent the time to do this song properly. Just looking at the harlem shake phenomenon, if she hadn't been wasting her time sitting on her ass instead of being in the studio... she could of been at the center of some media attention for this collab. Waiting this long and then releasing her pitiful version is the worst timing possible.... do not understand this girl.
If you hadn't heard harlem shake until her weak ass version, I'm pretty sure most people would like it anyway because the beat is godly.... but eh. Just helpless this girl. DONE. Yung Rapunxel better be some amazing **** or I'm completely done with this girl for good.
