In general culture is sexualized. But, gay culture seems to be on a higher level of sexuality. For example, Pride parades are often sexual, and that leads to stereotypes from non-gay groups.
That's a tough question to answer because it's about the media's portrayal of a minority group AND insinuating the minority group is in some way responsible for the way the media portrays them.
And I believe it's a bit of both. Some elements of queer culture are highly sexualized, which makes sense given that the entire repression of sexuality that the (western) world has imposed on them in the first place. Much of the culture is born from queer individuals, invisible, hidden or obliterated in the mainstream looking for others like them to express their desires and find connections in a world that has cast them out. I find this leads to those outside the queer community see it as highly sexualized because the community has otherwise had NO OUTLETS for those desires for the longest time. And when they do it's in the dark, in shame and in secret.
While things are changing (mostly for affluent and upper-middle class white male homosexuals unsurprisingly), the "stigma" of hypersexuality still remains. While there are still closets and backrooms where people hide ashamed and/or afraid, much of those visible homosexuals are able to express their desires in the same fashion as heterosexuals have enjoyed for centuries. Being that homosexuals in how they've been displayed the past century up until now were widely desexualized (usually shown as camp, effeminate or otherwise comical and/or tragic characters existing so far out of the realms of heterosexuality as to be clowns), when people see those homosexuals engaging with each other the same way heteros have been able to, people are surprised. Both the history of the queer culture's sexual underground and the mainstream's long-term desexualization of queer individuals are meeting in this day and age to create this fantasy of all homosexuals as being highly sexual/promiscuous.
That isn't to say it's not true, there are those of us who have high sexual appetites or buy into the mainstream imagery of the hypersexual queer- but in the end we're generally no more sexual than any other human being. We just have a shadowy history that's rooted in that sexuality and its repression.
Hmm I think the lgbt community is in a way sexually liberated. The way we are and the hate we receive sometimes forces certain people to rise above old ideas or be more socially conscious. Yes that one of the reason why modern family does so well because it show the opposite. I remember watching Brokeback mountain and it felt more of an exotic dream. I was turn on the entire time.
