On the specialty front, Picturehouse rolled out "El Cantante," a biopic of salsa singer Hector Lavoe starring Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez, in 542 theaters. In the 12th spot overall, the Leon Ichaso-helmed film grossed an estimated $3.3 million for a per-theater average of $6,003.
"The core Latino audience really turned out for the film," Picturehouse president Bob Berney said. "The per-screen average for the New York (area) was $19,636 on a broad release of 34 screens. We'll add about 50 screens nationally this weekend."

J Lo Hypnotizes Theater Goers
2 hours 8 min ago by PopSugar [+]
Jennifer Lopez has been in LA promoting El Cantante and even though the movie didn't crack the top ten grossing films in its opening weekend, it is considered a box office success. The movie brought in $3.3 million which is even less than LL's disaster film from last weekend, however, it is playing on so few screens and the actual average per screen was the 4th highest (behind Bourne, Simpsons and Becoming Jane). This is great news for Jennifer and Marc who put their heart and soul into this project. So along with her fabulous marriage and her successful business empire, J Lo can now be proud of her opening weekend box office numbers - even if $3.3 seems low.
