I voted for Madonna by Mistake... but anyway there's huge difference between the votes of the two.

MJ is/was grossly overrated, never got the fascination about him. I am not saying he was "the worst" musician ever, but mediocre at the very best... her private life & scandals made him more of a celebrity than he really was.

Madonna on the other hand... overrated? Her tour stats don't say that.

Michael Jackson - Benefited from technology, when technology was starting to boom. Of course people will be attracted to MJ with the technology that he was using at that time.

Thriller overrated, very overrated, because HIStory is the best album he's ever made This album showed his true artistic value.

Madonna benefited from shock value, whatever hasn't been done, she was the first one to do it, which is why you see Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Katy, Rihanna, etc.. doing all these crazy stints, and the GP is like "this has been done a million times already", meaning Madonna has already done these. It's like filling an empty void, and now that the void has been filled, there is no longer excitement.


None of them are overrated though, they've both sold 200M albums WW.

Now, if we're really talking about overrated, we'll discuss it over a cup of tea.

This pretty much sums up my opinion of MJ - Imo, Prince should've triumphed MJ in sales, acclaim etc, he took more risks and challenged his artistry. Madonna also did the same, and thats why she isn't overrated - I also think this generation and next will resonate better with Madonna's discography more than MJ (who might I add, has a very weak discography), because she has more rememberable hits that spans more than just 2 decades such as MJ!

This is also another reason why Madonna is held on higher pedistol than MJ. She not only used her public figure as a way to push important issues to the GP but fight for them. She was a pioneer, while MJ was battling personal demons, which I still don't think he was able to get rid of. The GP respects and loves Madonna, MJ's respect was a portion of Madonna's when he died, as his demons with child molestation charges damaged his image. But anyway, Madonna will be more remembered because of her longevity and shock value (like u mentioned) etc from her huge, impactful career.

Michael, only because he's borderline deified by many followers of pop culture. It's annoying - you can't criticize him in front of them without being attacked, and you can't so much as think that he's not as big as they claim with their 1 billion records comments and other allegations. According to some people, he's outsold every artst ever and there's not a single artist on Earth who isn't directly influenced by him.
