Naomi Watts will portray Princess Diana on an upcoming film.
Directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel (The Invasion), the film will centre on the two years leading up to Diana's death, and specifically her alleged affair with heart surgeon Dr Hasnat Khan (played by Lost star Naveen Andrews).
"It is such an honour to be able to play this iconic role," Watts has said of her casting. "Princess Diana was loved across the world, and I look forward to rising to the challenge of playing her on screen."
She has admitted that she initially wanted to turn down the role because it scared her, but couldn't bring herself to do so.
A separate biopic is in production from producer Stephen Evans, with Carey Mulligan and Charlize Theron among the actresses reportedly in the running to play Diana.
