Carrie Underwood says Grammy performance is a chance to 'represent' Country
Carrie Underwood | February 7, 2013 | By: Jason Scott
Carrie Underwood isn't a stranger to performing at the Grammy Awards. In fact, the five-time phonograph winner has had the pleasure of performing countless times in various tributes and solo performances over the years. Each time, however, Underwood says that she still gets nervous but notes that the one-of-a-kind experiences have been well worth it.
"I'm excited to be performing on the Grammy awards and honored that they would have me back," she tells The Boot. "I've been lucky enough to have performed on it several times and have been a part of some cool moments on the show, like the Michael Jackson tribute with Celine Dion, Usher, Smokey Robinson and Jennifer Hudson."
Year in and year out, the Grammys become a celebration of a wide range of musical genres, ranging from Country and hip-hop to rap and pop. Underwood explains how honored she is to get a performance slot, as they are rather limited for the three-hour telecast. "I definitely feel like a representative for country music. The Grammys represent so many types of music and there are only so many slots available for people to perform," she asserts. "I'm honored and want to do the best job I possibly can to represent our format and show everybody what they might be missing in country music, and make them jump on the bandwagon for country music."
Underwood's stirring "Blown Away" track, off her platinum-selling and award-winning album of the same name, earned two nods at the upcoming ceremony. Garnering attention in the "Best Country Solo Performance" and "Best Country Song," the latter which goes to songwriters Josh Kear and Chris Tompkins, the song is a sure-fire prediction to get voter love. The possibility of going home with some much-deserved hardware isn't the only reason Underwood loves the awards show.
"Any time you can meet people outside our format who have been around so long and have so much respect, is wonderful," she beams. "I'm excited to be nominated and get to go and perform."
The 55th Annual Grammy Awards kick off live from Staples Center in LA on Feb. 10 and will be broadcast on CBS at 8 p.m. EST.
