Nicole Scherzinger tributes Whitney Houston in photoshoot
Quote:
‘I was in LA in February last year when I heard about Whitney’s passing. Anyone who knows the industry knows that you can’t deny the ghosts and demons that haunt you. It’s a hard business and it’s easy to get lost. Someone as bright as her, a strong vessel like that, was a target for dark forces, but she was so great that I don’t care what happened along the way.
After she passed, I performed the first Whitney song I ever heard, ‘The Greatest Love of All’, on The X Factor. It sucks to take on Whitney songs, because no one can sing them like her. She had such a powerful energy about her that when she sang it was like she had wings — she filled the universe with her voice. Hers was a divine gift and it happened to come in the most beautiful package. Singing her song was my way of saying, “Thank you, I love you, and my prayers will always be with you.”
Whitney showed me that singing was my destiny. When I was six I used to make collages of her on my bedroom wall. Her voice had a soul-stirring power; it was the truth. Even now it’s hard not to cry when I think of her; there’s such a deep emotional connection. Because of her I try to be honest and tell my own story when I sing. But I can never be her and I wouldn’t want to try.
I was only blessed enough to meet her once. I had just come off stage and her husband Bobby Brown said, “Hey, we should work together!” As he spoke, all I could do was stare at Whitney behind him. When she came over and said, “Let’s go, Bobby,” I teared up. I’ll always remember her as a beacon of light. I hope I see her in another life.’
