Let's get into this little known gem, January, by songwriter-extraordinaire Bonnie McKee.
(Keep in mind that she wrote/composed this song all by HERSELF at age 16.)
In 2004, while Avril and Kelly were giving us bubblegum break-up songs, Miss Bonnie put out a song about her underage love-affair with a much older man.
With lines like the following:
Quote:
"I'm counting down the days on my calender 'til loving me won't be a sin."
or
Quote:
"Baby, we'll be legal when the season turns"
...is it any wonder that Bonnie didn't break into the bubblegum pop market that she was targeted to? There she was trying to be a modern day Fiona Apple, but she was being marketed like some piano-playing-Avril.
Though she has definitely lightened up her demeanor in the past 8 years, songs like this are what give me hope that she won't be Katy Perry 2.0, but a whole new kind of pop star.
Let's not shade Queen Kelly. But, I'm here for Bonnie and I've said many times that "Somebody" is one of my favorite songs ever. I can't wait to hear her new material

I'm not shading the other girls. Just using those names as a reference to how misdirected Bonnie's marketing was. They tried to promote her in the same vein as Avril/Ashlee/Kelly/Michelle, but she really wasn't musically similar AT ALL.
