Jessica Biel pressed by Anne Hathaway
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
Jessica Biel 'fuming' over losing plum movie roles to Anne Hathaway as her newest rom-com misfires

Jessica Biel’s not getting the roles she wants, and some film industry observers say she needs to try tougher roles to prove her talent.
Between marrying Justin Timberlake, starring as Gerard Butler’s love interest in “Playing for Keeps” and landing a bit in “Hitchcock,” it would seem Jessica Biel is doing okay. But people close to the 30-year-old beauty say she’s focused more on the roles she’s not getting.
“Jessica was fuming when she heard she didn’t get the role of Catwoman,” says an insider of “The Dark Knight Rises” gig that went to Anne Hathaway instead. “She really thought she was going to get it, but when Christopher Nolan handed the role to Hathaway, she was devastated.”
That wasn’t the only 2012 big-ticket flick Biel is said to have lost to Hathaway. She was pursuing the role of Fantine in “Les Miserables.”
Biel was also up for a star role in the upcoming superhero film “Wolverine” opposite Hugh Jackman, but that didn't go her way either.
“She didn’t get the part,” a producer who’s worked with Biel tells us.
One powerful Hollywood agent blames Biel’s camp for choosing the wrong roles.
“I don’t know why she keeps doing those bad romantic comedies,” the 10-percenter tells Confidenti@l. “They need to get her a meaty guest-starring role on a hit TV show.”
Biel’s new rom-com has been met with tepid reviews. The Daily News’ Elizabeth Weitzman gave “Playing for Keeps” two out of five stars and called it “just another generic date-night flick, destined to be forgotten almost immediately.”
According to another top-tier agent, the secret’s finally out that Biel might not be very good.
“She may be a gorgeous girl, but her acting ability just isn’t where it needs to be,” says our inside source. “She hasn’t proven that she’s a real actor.”
Another Hollywood player says Biel’s biggest problem has been an inability to establish an identity.
“Being married to Justin Timberlake is her calling card at the moment,” the insider tells Confidenti@l. “There is nothing extraordinary about her, like Carey Mulligan or even Amy Adams, so she’s not on the studios’ radar unless they’re love-interest roles.”
One agent we talked to suggests that “she should get an acting coach and do an independent film or two that would show off her talent, not her beauty.”
