Apple Maps has already begun showing signs of improvement. Maps updates happen automatically on the server end and do not correlate with iOS 6 updates.
They need to can it already and accept that google has outdone them in the maps app department.

Apple did it for a reason. Google was not adding features to the original app. They had to kick them out to get them to update. Google didn't want to be left without iOS because that means they lose money.
In a way, they used each other to get what they want at the cost of the consumer. Everyone wins in the end.
