Queen Beatrix, who turns 75 on Thursday, is expected to announce her abdication in favour of her son, Prince Willem-Alexander, in a hastily called broadcast to the nation on Monday evening, Dutch media reported.

The Dutch Royal House says Beatrix will deliver a nationally televised speech this evening and speculation is growing that the popular monarch will announce she is to abdicate.

Beatrix has ruled the nation of 16 million for more than 32 years and would be succeeded by her eldest son, Crown Prince Willem-Alexander.

The Royal House announced Monday afternoon that the speech was recorded earlier in the day at Beatrix’s Huis ten Bosch palace on the outskirts of The Hague.

The announcement made no mention of the subject of the speech and the Royal House refused to comment further.

Mainly a ceremonial position. They can block a new law though, but they have to step down from the throne in exchange.

I am not dutch... I am Aruban.. we are part of the dutch colony, so I can speak dutch and know the general stuff about the netherlands.. and of course the whole monarchy is exciting for the dutch Caribbean islands

Love Queen Beatrix, she's a motherly figure who knows what she's talking about and dealing with, she's one of the best heads of state a country could wish for imo...

It'll be interesting to see how King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima will rule the country, but I think they'll do great as well!

Oooh it'll be interesting to see a new monarch in Europe, I'm guessing Britain won't see a coronation anytime soon since the Queen seems to be going strong and most likely wont ever retire.

Also, Queen's Day will no longer be celebrated on April 30th, but we'll be celebrating King's Day on April 27th from 2014 on, it's his birthday.
