How Would Madonna's Career Have Turned Out If She Was Black?
Madonna is known for stirring up controversy, sometimes to express herself artistically, sometimes to prove a point and sometimes just for the hell of it.
Here are a few snapshots of her most controversial moments:

My question is that with all else being equal (I'm talking vocals, music, performances, lyrics, promotion, level of attractiveness, content, interviews, controversy, where she slept on March 18, 1988, EVERYTHING) how would the world have reacted to Madonna if she were a Black woman with medium brown skin? Would everything be the same and would she be where she is today? Or would America have shunned her ENTIRELY at the first hint of controversy? Would her career have hit a point that she wouldn't have been able to come back from at some point? How would the Black community have reacted to her? Discuss.

Look at Janet (someone who, along with Madge, was a pioneer of female sexuality in mainstream music). Janet recieves half the credit Madge does and her impact is hardly ever acknowledged by the GP.

Sure, she's be like Janet. I don't think she'd be as successful commercially though due to racism or she might have broken through like Janet and Michael. Great question though

Sadly, she is just so influential she deserves way more props. I believe if madonna were a black women she wouldn't have been as successful due to racism which was even more prominent in the 1980's. I still think if madonna were a black female she would have influence though.

Well, if you think about it. Madonna was not really getting MTV airplay early on because of her music, yet some of her early songs did chart on Hip-Hop/R&b chart. I think she would have been successful. but she would have taken a much different route. There would have been a turn of events.
Its not like there was no diversity in the 80s or 90s, many black artists were successful. Especially Diana, Tina, Whitney, Donna, and Janet and a few others. So to say she would flop is a bit off.

What racism? The one on MTV? Yeah I can agree with that, but also people who did not sing rock were not getting play. Madonna a pop/dance artist was not getting play early on MTV much like many others.
There was also many black artists who were successful. If anything, blacks were as successful as whites during the 80s. There was much more diversity then, than now.

Part of what I'm wondering as well is if a Black woman could've "gotten away" with being as controversial as Madonna was/is.

I suppose that plays a role. I'm thinking someone with my complexion. I know you can't see me, but think someone around Michael Jackson's complexion circa 1983.

I agree with MM3 and was going to say basically the same thing. Madonna wouldn't have gotten away with half the stunts she pulled if she were black.

What do you mean what racism??? I never said she wouldn't be successful or played on MTV. Just because a lot of black artists were popular during that time period didn't mean they weren't facing racism in some form. When I was referring to racism I meant it from all sides. Whitney Houston was booed for being too pop, could you imagine the backlash from supporting the gay community which was a much more huge taboo at the time. Madonna has white priveledge is she were black she wouldn't get away with half her stunts.

Sadly, I don't think a black woman would've been able to "get away" with Madonna has done and reached the same level of success. Racism exists, and it doesn't have to be the obvious 19th century-levels of cruelty either. Despite that, I don't think she'd fail entirely either (I don't think Madonna has ever done anything as oddly calculated as Janet's nip slip debacle), perhaps be an underground artist.

Her career would have ended with "Live To Tell". If she survived that, her career would have ended with the sex book. Black artists generally aren't given second chances.

depends? is she a blonde haired, hazel eyed, european features black woman? then she may have had success. A fully black chocolate girl like kelly rowland? no chance

A lot of white artists wouldn't have survived Madonna's "Sex" era.

20 years ago? No.
She almost didn't survive it career-wise.

Doesn't matter. White artists are always given second chances. They F up, they cry all over the public, they issue an apology, and it's as if it never happened. Case and point - Madonna, Lindsay Lohan, and Britney Spears.
Black artists Fs up, they are shunned by the media, their contributions are wiped from memory, and they're left to the wolves. Case and point - Janet, MJ, Whitney.
