Well given that a demo is not meant for the public to hear, singing a song in a certain key perhaps because you want it to appeal to an artist with a certain range is by no means impractical. I have worked in studios and with songwriters for 8 years now and this really is not that abnormal. Right, the demo singers voice isn't all that important, but when it affects the perception of the melody like this demo did, then it might be better to hire a demo singer who can hit those notes legitimately. Or at the least, apply autotune in a less obvious way, or really they should have just used Melodyne
