I truly don't understand this. I mean, when people dismiss Lana as just a Tumblr artist - this thread is a reason why.
Like, in what world can an album that still hasn't gone gold in the US, has popped up on maybe five critics lists at best, and received no Grammy nominations be called the best?
It has failed commercially. (IN THE US.)
It has failed critically.
It has failed in gaining respect from its peers.
Yet, the OP positions it as something that unassailably assumed to be truly great. Like, in the face of such staggering evidence, how can anyone think that those who don't believe this album is the best are wrong?

Obviously. There were only a few good albums last year and Lana topped them all.

Warrior and BTD and Paradise are tied for best albums of 2012.

Because the US is the only important market? BTD has sold ~3 million copies worldwide, and it HAS gone gold in the US
Her metascore isn't bad either, 60's is pretty normal these days, and since indie blogs hate her it's not a surprise that her score isn't higher.
Some Tumblr artist, huh? 3 million copies, the 4th highest selling album of 2012, plenty more than almost everyone's faves

Like, in what world can an album that still hasn't gone gold in the US, has popped up on maybe five critics lists at best, and received no Grammy nominations be called the best? - It has gone gold (has Blunderbus gone gold?)
It has failed commercially. (IN THE US.) See above Blunderbus - and look at the longivity of the album its one year in the top 50
It has failed critically. - Yes but only in the US
It has failed in gaining respect from its peers. - Come on different artist cover it from US John Mayer to best female rock voice of europe - within temptation. And something more - there are that many remixies from artists and DJ of the Album that shows that she has something special.

no...i was very meticulous during my listens to BTD, both editions
born to die, off to the races, national anthem, radio, and diet mountain dew.
ride and the very beginning of cola before she starts singing.
everything else is rubbish. BTD/PE is, therefore, not the best album of 2012

Ugh no where near it. And I bought it.
You must only listen to top 40 music to claim it is. There's was so many great albums that came out last year. This pales in comparison.

No. I like Lana, but BTD/Paradise had quite a lot of filler. And (III), Electra Heart and kin all were much better.

Oh God!
Cuz US is the main market in the world. Cuz going Gold depends of the quality of the album. Cuz it failed critically cuz of a performance. Failed gaining respect from its peers? Really? I can't remember another artist that got celebrities in the fan base in the 1st year of the career. Tumblr artist? Is tumblr a bad thing, tho?
I can name some artist that are ATRL artists which is far more worse than being an tumblr artist tho
BTD sold 3 million copies WW, so what critics are we talking about? Didn't the GP said it's word? I don't think that 3 million ppl went and bought an album cuz of a song or an H&M ad.
What I really can't understand is the hate towards an artist... just for the sake of hating an artist. Bandwagoning.
Oh btw, if you still consider Kylie as an great artist, you should check her TL, she praised Lana.
/end
p.s-Yes, it is the best album released last year. Truly inspiring, fresh.

Ace's point was that Lana's not some artist with exceedingly impressive accolades. She's not really that acclaimed, and her sales could be more impressive in the US. She's not as respected by her peers as many other critically lauded and/or pop artists.

No, not at all. I don't get the love for it. Sure, there are some good tracks, but it is largely disappointing and overhyped.
What month was it released in? Maybe it was the best album released in that month? Certainly NOT for the year though

NOPE! The Idler Wheel, kin, Unorthodox Jukebox, Bloom, The Heist, True, Shrines, Visions, channel ORANGE, and good kid, m.A.A.d city are all far better than that album. Born To Die is one of the worst of last year and THE most overrated.
